Richard Schmalbeck is Of Counsel in Caplin & Drysdale's Washington, D.C. office and a Professor of Law at Duke University. He has served as Dean of the University Of Illinois College Of Law, and as a visiting professor on the University of Michigan and Northwestern University law faculties.

Highlights
- Served as an expert witness for the State of Maryland involving executive compensation of the chief executive of the Maryland and Capital area Blue Cross company
- Worked with the Mannweiler Foundation in obtaining passage in the Vermont legislature of the first act enabling Low Profit Limited Liability companies to be charted in that state; this included testimony before the Vermont legislature, and also some follow-up work in developing proposed federal tax legislation regarding these so-called L3Cs
- Prepared a white paper on the use of off-shore corporations by nonprofit organizations as conduits for hedge-fund investments for the Council on Foundations
Mr. Schmalbeck received his BA and JD degrees from the University of Chicago, where he was Associate Editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. Prior to beginning his teaching career, he worked as a special assistant to the Associate Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and as an Associate of this firm.
Professional Activities
Mr. Schmalbeck serves as Faculty Director of the Institute on Transnational Law at the University of Geneva.
Selected Recent Publications
Mr. Schmalbeck’s recent scholarly work has focused on issues involving nonprofit organizations, and the federal estate and gift taxes. The third edition of his federal income tax casebook, co-authored with Lawrence Zelenak, will be published in 2010 from Aspen Publishers.
