Richard Schmalbeck is Of Counsel in Caplin & Drysdale's Washington, D.C. office and a Professor of Law at Duke University. He has served as Dean of the University Of Illinois College Of Law, and as a visiting professor on the University of Michigan and Northwestern University law faculties. His recent scholarly work has focused on issues involving nonprofit organizations, and the federal estate and gift taxes. Mr. Schmalbeck also serves as an advisor to the Russian Federation in connection with its tax reform efforts, and as Faculty Director of the Institute on Transnational Law at the University of Geneva. The second edition of his federal income tax casebook, co-authored with Lawrence Zelenak, was recently released by Aspen Publishers.
He received his BA and JD degrees from the University of Chicago, where he was Associate Editor of the University of Chicago Law Review. Prior to beginning his teaching career, he worked as a special assistant to the Associate Director of the Office of Management and Budget, and as an Associate of this firm.
