In an era when law firms are growing rapidly and multinational accounting firms are pursuing the practice of tax law, Caplin & Drysdale has intentionally remained small. As we have for over forty years, we focus on providing unparalleled service to our clients in a culture that enables our lawyers to have full and enriched lives outside the firm.
Our practice is largely in two areas, tax law and litigation. Our tax lawyers comprise one of the preeminent groups of tax practitioners in the country. Many came to the firm from clerkships or senior positions at the Treasury Department, Justice Department, or IRS. We represent a full range of clients, from individuals to multinational corporations. We handle a broad spectrum of tax matters, including resolving major tax disputes, planning complex international transaction, and providing counsel to many of the largest and most prestigious non-profit organizations in the world. We rarely handle "routine" tax matters; most of our engagements involve issues of first impression requiring creativity and sophisticated legal analysis. Robert E. Scott, Dean of the University of Virginia School of Law, has even described Caplin & Drysdale as "one of the most important places in the United States for the practice and development of tax law. It is not only a place where people and firms with serious tax problems seek assistance. It is an incubator for tax talent...."
Our litigators come with outstanding academic and professional credentials, including Supreme Court clerkships and experience as senior federal prosecutors. As the rest of our web site describes, our litigation practice consists largely of cutting-edge commercial litigation and challenging criminal matters. Because of our size, our staffing of cases is lean and efficient. A new lawyer quickly will assume as much responsibility as he or she is able.
We have relatively few associates and look to add no more than two to four new lawyers each year. We hire with care, since we value our collegiality and view each new associate as a future partner. If you are looking for a firm that offers quality of life, challenging work, and a practice at the highest intellectual levels, please contact us.
