Caplin Alum Fay Vincent Reflects on His Mentor, Mort Caplin

Date: 8/19/2015

In The Wall Street Journal article "We All Need a Few Good Mentors," Caplin alum Fay Vincent reflects on the deep impact mentors have in shaping who we are today.  Noteworthy among Mr. Vincent's mentors is Caplin & Drysdale's founder, Mortimer M. Caplin, who recently celebrated his 99th birthday. From Mr. Caplin, Vincent "learned the merits of a leader who rarely asserted his authority and tolerated free-ranging debates on topics he had the power to decide."  This continues to be a hallmark of Caplin's culture to this day.

Vincent goes on to say that Mr. Caplin "carefully buil[t] respect among his younger partners by listening patiently and accepting views from us that we knew he did not share.  Mort was teaching lessons that are rooted in wisdom and character.  Being smart is not sufficient even if it is essential. [Caplin & Drysdale] has prospered and survived, no small credit to him."
