Washington, D.C.—February 1, 2013: After five years with Caplin & Drysdale as an Associate, Matthew C. Hicks has become a Member of the firm.  An experienced trial attorney, Hicks is a key member of the Tax Controversies, Tax Litigation, and Tax Crimes practice groups.  He advises businesses, financial professionals, and high-net-worth individuals on all matters involving federal tax disputes ranging from sensitive criminal tax fraud investigations to complex civil tax litigation.  Known for his creativity in helping clients resolve tax disputes, Hicks is well-versed at guiding clients through audits and investigations, and defending them against tax assessments, monetary penalties, and criminal prosecution.

Hicks started his legal career as a law clerk at the District of Columbia Court of Appeals under the Honorable Frank E. Schwelb. He then served as a trial attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice, Tax Division, where Hicks twice received a Special Act or Service Award recognizing his contributions to the DOJ. In addition, the Internal Revenue Service awarded Hicks with the Mitchell Rogovin National Outstanding Support to the Office of Chief Counsel Award. He earned his law degree at the Georgetown University Law Center.
