Celebrating 100 Years with Tax Law Titan Mortimer Caplin

July 28, 2016, The National Law Journal

On July 11, 2016, the 100th birthday of Caplin & Drysdale founder and former IRS Commissioner Mortimer M. Caplin, The National Law Journal featured the centenarian in an article paying tribute to his legacy in tax law.  Firm President Beth Shapiro Kaufman also commented on Mr. Caplin’s transition to retirement.  For the full article, please visit The National Law Journal’s website.

Caplin & Drysdale's current president, Beth Shapiro Kaufman, called Caplin "a delightful person" who made an enduring mark on the firm. For one, she said, he championed the business transition from his generation to a succession of younger generations, making one of the most significant challenges of law firm management look easy.

When Kaufman started as an associate 30 years ago, "Everybody was worried, What if Mort retires?" Kaufman recalled. "He brought in work, handed it off. He had complete confidence [in his partners]." The clients felt comfortable hiring other lawyers than the tax legend, and the firm blossomed, she said.

Caplin said his firm was considered "the new firm you ought to go to" around the time of its founding in 1964. He had hired one of his best students from the University of Virginia School of Law, Douglas Drysdale, and others straight from U.S. Supreme Court clerkships. They all cared deeply about tax law and policy, he said.
