An Order of the Coif graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, Arianna Caldwell joined Caplin & Drysdale as an Associate in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office after participating in the Summer Associate Program in 2014 and 2015.

Ms. Caldwell’s practice focuses on tax planning and tax controversies, related to topics such as double taxation, subpart F, and transfer pricing. She is also involved in counseling individual and corporate clients with U.S. and global assets on strategies to minimize their tax obligations and stay in compliance with U.S. tax authorities.

Examples include:

  • working on the structuring, restructuring, and U.S. tax obligations of multinational entities;

  • advising on the tax treatment of financial transactions and investment and insurance structures;

  • assisting individuals, corporations, and financial institutions who need to come into compliance with U.S. tax requirements, including FATCA reporting and reportable transaction disclosures; and

  • supporting clients involved in complex IRS tax examinations.


Nominated by her peers and faculty, Ms. Caldwell received the 2016 Rosenbloom Award, established by Daniel Rosenbloom ’54 to honor UVA Law students with strong academic records who significantly enhanced the academic experience of other law students by volunteering support and assistance. She is also the recipient of the 2016 John M. Olin Prize in Law and Economics which recognizes UVA Law graduates who produced outstanding work in the field of law and economics.

A member of Virginia Law Review’s Editorial Board, Ms. Caldwell served as a peer advisor for the LL.M. Section and as a member of the Virginia Law Women’s Society and the Virginia Law and Business Society. She was previously an Assistant Account Executive at Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, a public relations firm, where Ms. Caldwell was a member of Microsoft’s public relations team specializing in crisis communications.
